Sisyphus was an astute ruler who brought wealth to his city, but he was also a deceitful tyrant who mistreated his niece and killed guests to display his power. His violation of the sacred custom of hospitality greatly angered the gods, yet it was Sisyphus' bold arrogance, as he twice outwitted them to escape the afterlife, that ultimately led to his downfall, with Zeus condemning him to eternal punishment.
