This week we focus on Norse mythology, the myths and legends belonging to the Germanic peoples of Scandinavia, mostly during the Viking Age (c. 790-1100 CE). Their tales include a polytheistic pantheon with gods including Odin, Thor, and Loki, alongside an intricate cosmology of nine realms linked by the World Tree, Yggdrasil.
We discussed a creation myth, a story of Ragnarok (the end of the world), and a few of the many times Loki, the trickster, bested beasts and gods, including the time he helped his brother, Thor, dress up in disguise as Freyja to steal back his hammer, Mjölnir.
We also made Norse inspired keychains!
In our older class we also discussed the elements of J.R.R. Tolkien's works that were inspired by Thor Mythology.
