This week we begin our focus on the many exhibits and resources provided by The Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County. We kicked off by exploring the African and North American Diorama Halls, which feature incredibly lifelike depictions of wild animals in their natural habitats.
After spending time sharing animals that interest each of us, the students picked an animal to focus on for their Animal Habitat Diorama Project. Since we have two weeks in between meeting again, the students were encouraged to continue their research and exploration of their chosen animals at home.
To begin their exploration, the students incorporated the questions I provided into their books as a starting point, along with their own illustrations of their animals.
Below are some instances of projects done by other students, along with a video where a teacher describes the process of making her own habitat diorama. Students have the option to utilize paper, clay, paint, animal printouts, and printouts for their backgrounds, as well as natural materials of their choice.
A few students were able to begin creating the base for their diorama in class. I encouraged all students to start researching and gathering items they want to use for their diorama during the break, and to bring everything to class when we come back.
