Writing Compelling Characters

This week we continue to explore character development and character arc.

We talked about Destiny Salter's insights on the process of creating a Compelling Character. According to her, a compelling character is:

Sympathetic (different from likable)

Nuanced (they have layers)

Flawed (they’re not perfect)

Active (they go after what they want)

We took a look at some of our OC's and tried to identify these three key elements for each of them:

A DESIRE: What do they want more than anything else?

A NEED: What do they need? It could involve recognizing the truth, undergoing a moral transformation, or placing trust in the right individuals. This should be distinct from their wants.

A FLAW: What is holding them back and preventing their progress? What are they unaware of about themselves or others?
